What are relative pronouns?

A relative pronoun (who, whose, which, that) adds information about a noun. Use who for people, and which or that for things.

How do I teach relative pronouns?

Ask, "Is it a person or a thing?" Who points back to people; which and that point back to things. Have children join two short sentences: I have a friend. She plays chess. I have a friend who plays chess.

What mistake should I watch for?

Using which or that for people, as in "the teacher which helped me." People take who.

What grade learns relative pronouns?

Usually 4th grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.4.1a.
