How to teach digraphs

  1. Two letters, one sound. Write the digraph on one card, not two, so children see it as a single sound.
  2. Use a body cue. A finger on the lips for sh, a sneeze for ch, the tongue between the teeth for th.
  3. Compare pairs. Ship and chip, shop and chop, thin and chin. Children point to the right picture.
  4. Start and end. Digraphs can come at the start (ship) or the end (fish). The sort page practices both.
  5. Read in sentences. Short sentences show the sounds in real reading, not just single words.

Common questions

What is a digraph?

A digraph is two letters that together make one sound, such as sh in ship, ch in chick, th in thumb and ck in duck. The two letters do not make their usual separate sounds.

What is the difference between a digraph and a blend?

In a digraph, two letters make one new sound (sh). In a blend, you still hear both sounds, said quickly together (fl in flag). Children usually learn the common digraphs and blends in kindergarten and 1st grade.

Which digraphs should children learn first?

Most programs start with sh, ch and th, then ck at the end of short words. Wh and ph usually come a little later. In the Common Core, 1st grade children know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs (RF.1.3a).

Can I copy these worksheets for my class?

Yes. The PDFs are free to print and photocopy for classroom and home use, in color or in the black-and-white ink saver. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
