Five flashcard games

  1. Two piles. Say it, sort it: “know it” or “not yet”. Tomorrow, start with the “not yet” pile.
  2. Beat the clock. How many cards in one minute? Write the score down and try to beat it next week.
  3. Memory match. Print two copies, lay them face down and turn over two at a time to find pairs.
  4. Swat it. Spread cards on the table, call out a word or answer, and the first to tap the card keeps it.
  5. Hide and seek. Hide ten cards around the room. Children read each one when they find it.

Common questions

How do I print flashcards with the answers on the back?

The math fact flashcards put each page of cards before its page of answers. Print double-sided and choose "flip on long edge" (sometimes called long-edge binding). Each answer then lands right behind its card. No duplex printer? Print single-sided and glue the answer page to the back before cutting.

What paper is best for flashcards?

Card stock (65 to 110 lb) lasts much longer than copy paper. For cards you will use every day, laminate the sheet before cutting, or slip the cut cards into a small ring.

How should we practice with flashcards?

Short and often beats long and rare: five minutes a day. Keep two piles, "know it" and "not yet", and only practice the "not yet" pile next time. Add a few known cards each day so children finish on a win.

Can I make my own flashcards?

Yes. The free flashcard maker turns any list, such as spelling words, vocabulary or science terms, into printable cards with a front and a back.

Can I copy these flashcards for my class?

Yes. The PDFs are free to print and photocopy for classroom and home use, in color or in the black-and-white ink saver. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
