Tips for word searches
- Read the words first. Say each word aloud and spell it before searching.
- Hunt for the first letter. Find the first letter, then check the letters all around it.
- Look for odd letters. A word with a J, K or V is quick to spot.
- Tick as you go. Cross each word off the bank so nothing is missed.
Common questions
Which word search is right for my child?
Easy word searches suit kindergarten and 1st grade: big letters, eight words with pictures, and words that only go across or down. Medium ones suit 2nd and 3rd grade, with words on a slant too. Hard ones, for 4th and 5th grade, hide fifteen words in all eight directions, including backwards.
Are word searches good for learning?
Yes, in small doses. Finding a word means holding its spelling in mind and scanning letter by letter, which builds spelling, letter recognition and attention to detail. The sight word and vocabulary searches double as review of words children are learning.
Do the word searches have answer keys?
Yes. The second page of every PDF shades each hidden word, so you can check answers in seconds.
Can I make my own word search?
Yes. The free word search maker turns any list of words, like this week's spelling words, into a printable word search with an answer key. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Can I copy these word searches for my class?
Yes. The PDFs are free to print and photocopy for classroom and home use, in color or in the black-and-white ink saver. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
