worksheets for kindergarten to 3rd grade
Count forward in jumps of 2, 3, 5 or 10 and spot even and odd numbers. Skip counting makes counting big groups quicker, and it is the first step to the times tables.
- Skip counting by 2s1st and 2nd grade
Start at 0 and jump 2 each time: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Skip a number, say a number. The ones digit keeps going 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
- Skip counting by 3s2nd and 3rd grade
Start at 0 and jump 3 each time: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. Counting by 3s gives the answers to the 3 times table.
- Skip counting by 5sKindergarten to 2nd grade
Start at 0 and jump 5 each time: 5, 10, 15, 20. The numbers always end in 5 or 0.
- Skip counting by 10sKindergarten and 1st grade
Start at 0 and jump 10 each time: 10, 20, 30, 40. Only the tens digit changes, and every number ends in 0.
- Even and odd numbers2nd grade
An even number can be shared into two equal groups, or made into pairs with none left over. An odd number always has one left over. Look at the ones digit: 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 are even; 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are odd.

How to teach skip counting
- Say it out loud together. Chant the numbers with a clap on each one: 5, 10, 15, 20. Rhythm makes the pattern stick.
- Hop on a number line. Draw the jumps. Each hop is the same size, which is what makes it skip counting.
- Look for the pattern on a hundreds chart. Counting by 10s goes straight down a column. Counting by 5s makes two columns. Counting by 2s makes stripes.
- Count real things. Pairs of shoes by 2s, fingers by 5s, dimes by 10s. Children see why skip counting is faster.

Common questions
What is skip counting?
Skip counting is counting forward by a number other than 1, for example 5, 10, 15, 20. Each number is the same jump from the one before.
When do children learn to skip count?
Kindergartners count to 100 by ones and by tens. In 2nd grade the Common Core adds counting within 1000 by 5s, 10s and 100s, and 3rd graders use skip counting to learn the times tables.
How do you know if a number is even or odd?
Look at the ones digit. If it is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 the number is even; if it is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 it is odd. Even numbers can be shared into two equal groups.
Can I copy these worksheets for my class?
Yes. The PDFs are free to print and photocopy for classroom and home use, in color or in the black-and-white ink saver. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
