Free generator

Type this week’s spelling words, choose the practice pages you want, and download a printable PDF. Or start from one of our 40 graded lists and edit it.

What each page is for

  • Word list: the week’s words, large, to read aloud together and send home.
  • Look, say, cover, write, check: the classic routine. Three tries per word, checking each one before the next.
  • Trace and write: trace the word on handwriting lines, then write it twice. Best for younger children.
  • Rainbow write: each word in rainbow letters, then written in red, blue and green. A favorite for repeated practice.
  • Word scramble: letters mixed up; the child rebuilds the word, which makes them think about letter order.
  • ABC order: sorting the words alphabetically means looking closely at every letter.
  • Spelling test sheet: numbered lines and a score box for the end-of-week test, or a practice test midweek.
  • Answer key: the unscrambled words and the correct ABC order, for quick marking.

Common questions

Is the spelling worksheet generator free?

Yes, completely. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many worksheets you make. The PDF is built in your browser, so your words never leave your computer.

What kinds of worksheets can it make?

Eight page types: a word list, look-say-cover-write-check, trace and write on handwriting lines, rainbow write, word scramble, ABC order, a spelling test sheet with a score box, and an answer key. Pick any combination and they come out as one PDF, in color or as a black-and-white ink saver.

How many words can I use?

Up to 20 words per worksheet, each up to 24 letters. Longer lists split across pages automatically, so 20 words in the trace-and-write layout becomes three pages.

Can I use words with apostrophes, like contractions?

Yes. Words like can't and they're work in every page type; in the word scramble, the apostrophe stays in its place and only the letters are mixed.
