How to teach r-controlled vowels
- Vowel plus r is one sound. Children underline the vowel and the r together, as they do with digraphs.
- Compare with short vowels. Cat and cart, hot and horn, bid and bird. Hearing the change helps children notice the r.
- One sound, three spellings. Er, ir and ur sound the same. Teach the sound first, then the spellings word by word.
- Sort often. Sorting by sound (ar, or, er) and then by spelling (er, ir, ur) builds both reading and spelling.
- Watch for w. After w, or usually sounds like er (word, work, worm). Point it out when it comes up.
Common questions
What is an r-controlled vowel?
An r-controlled vowel is a vowel followed by r, where the r changes the vowel sound: ar in car, or in corn, and er, ir and ur in her, bird and turtle. The vowel is neither short nor long.
Why is it called bossy r?
Because the r "bosses" the vowel in front of it and changes its sound. It is a friendly name that helps children remember to look for the r.
When do children learn r-controlled vowels?
Usually in late 1st grade and 2nd grade, after short vowels, digraphs and long vowels. They are part of decoding one- and two-syllable words in the Common Core reading foundations (RF.1.3, RF.2.3).
