worksheets for 3rd to 5th grade
Division from sharing cookies to long division: equal groups, arrays and fact families, division facts to 100, remainders and what they mean, and dividing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers step by step. Every pack ends with an answer key.
- Division as sharing3rd grade
Division means sharing into equal groups. 12 ÷ 3 = 4 means 12 things shared into 3 equal groups gives 4 in each group.
- Division facts3rd grade
Every division fact has a multiplication partner. To solve 42 ÷ 6, ask: 6 times what makes 42? Since 6 × 7 = 42, the answer is 7.
- Division with remainders4th grade
Sometimes things do not share evenly. 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R2: each group gets 4, and 2 are left over. The remainder is always smaller than the number you divide by.
- Long division4th and 5th grade
Divide one place at a time, starting on the left. Each round has four steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Then check by multiplying back.

What is in each pack
- 1. Learn itHow division works with a picture or a worked example, then a first practice.
- 2. PracticeEqual groups to write as division, fact family triangles, remainder drills or long division.
- 3. Skill pageQuick division facts, what to do with a remainder, or 3-digit long division.
- 4. Word problemsFour stories about sharing, packing and traveling.
- 5. Answer key and tipEvery answer on one page, plus a teaching tip for grown-ups.

How to teach division
- Share real things. Deal out cards or counters into equal piles. Division is fair sharing.
- Connect to multiplication. Every division fact has a multiplication partner. Fact family triangles show all four facts at once.
- Talk about leftovers. When things do not share evenly, the remainder is what is left. In stories, sometimes you round up and sometimes you drop it.
- Say the steps. For long division, say "divide, multiply, subtract, bring down" each round, and check by multiplying back.
- Check every answer. Quotient times divisor, plus the remainder, gives the number you started with.

Common questions
When do children learn division?
In the Common Core, children start division in 3rd grade as equal sharing and grouping, and by the end of the year they know all the division facts to 100. In 4th grade they divide up to 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, with remainders. In 5th grade they divide by 2-digit numbers.
How are multiplication and division related?
They undo each other. If 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7. Learning the times tables makes division facts easy.
What do the steps of long division mean?
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, then repeat. Each round shares out one place value at a time, starting with the biggest.
Can I copy these worksheets for my class?
Yes. The PDFs are free to print and photocopy for classroom and home use, in color or in the black-and-white ink saver. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
