- 0:00 Let's practice division with remainders, step by step.
- 0:04 Sometimes things don't share evenly. 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R2: each group gets 4, and 2 are left over.
- 0:14 Circle groups of 4. There are 6 groups, and 2 are left over. So 26 ÷ 4 = 6 R2.
- 0:23 22 children ride in cars that hold 4. 22 ÷ 4 = 5 R2, but the 2 children left over still need a car. So circle 6.
- 0:36 Word problems. Omar shares 28 apples equally into 6 bags. How many in each, and how many are left over? The answer is 4 in each, 4 left over: 28 ÷ 6 = 4 R4.
- 0:52 Great job! Now print the free worksheet, and finish the rest on your own.
How to do it
Sometimes things do not share evenly. 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R2: each group gets 4, and 2 are left over. The remainder is always smaller than the number you divide by.
Teaching tip
In word problems, ask what the leftovers mean. If 22 children ride in cars of 4, the 2 left over still need a car, so the answer is 6 cars.
