Tips for faster planning
- Start with the objective. Write what students will be able to do, then plan backwards from how you will check it.
- Plan the week first. Sketch Monday to Friday on the weekly plan, then fill a daily plan only for the lessons that need detail.
- Time every step. Minutes next to each part show at a glance whether the lesson fits the period.
- Keep a sub plan ready. Fill in the substitute plan once at the start of the year and update it each term.
Common questions
Can I type into these lesson plan templates?
Yes. Every box is a fillable form field. Open the PDF in your browser or in Adobe Acrobat Reader, click a box and type, then save or print. You can also print them blank and write by hand.
How do I save my typed lesson plan?
In Chrome or Edge, use the download or save icon after typing. In Adobe Acrobat Reader, use File, then Save As. Some mobile PDF viewers cannot fill forms; Acrobat Reader on a phone or tablet can.
What is the difference between the daily and 5E lesson plans?
The daily lesson plan follows the gradual release model: warm-up, I do, we do, you do and closing. The 5E plan follows engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate, which suits science and inquiry lessons.
Are these templates free for my school?
Yes. Print and copy them for your own classroom, your grade-level team or your school. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
