Common questions
What are adjectives?
An adjective describes a noun. It tells its color, size or shape, or how it looks, feels or tastes.
How do I teach adjectives?
Play "What is it like?" Hold up an object and children call out adjectives: smooth, red, round, heavy. Then use the best ones to make a sentence richer: a ball, a red ball, a big red ball.
What mistake should I watch for?
Calling the noun the adjective, as in "dog" in "the big dog". Ask: which word tells us what the dog is like? That word is the adjective.
What grade learns adjectives?
Usually 1st and 2nd grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.1.1f, L.2.1e.
