Common questions

What are comparing adjectives?

Add -er to an adjective to compare two things (tall, taller). Add -est to compare three or more things (tall, tallest).

How do I teach comparing adjectives?

Line up three objects of different sizes. Compare two ("The pencil is longer than the crayon"), then all three ("The ruler is the longest"). Children hear the rule before they read it.

What mistake should I watch for?

Using -est for only two things, as in "the tallest of the two." Two things take -er; three or more take -est. Also watch the spelling changes: big, bigger; happy, happier.

What grade learns comparing adjectives?

Usually 3rd grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.3.1g.
