Common questions

What are contractions?

A contraction is two words made into one. An apostrophe (') takes the place of the letters that are left out.

How do I teach contractions?

Write the two words on a strip of paper. Fold over the letters that leave, and put an apostrophe on the fold. Children see exactly where the apostrophe goes and why.

What mistake should I watch for?

Putting the apostrophe in the wrong place, as in "did'nt". The apostrophe goes where the missing letter was: did not, didn't.

What grade learns contractions?

Usually 2nd grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.2.2c.
