Common questions
What are interjections?
An interjection is a word that shows a sudden feeling, like Wow! or Ouch! Use an exclamation point for a strong feeling and a comma for a mild one.
How do I teach interjections?
Read the sentences aloud with feeling. Children quickly hear that interjections carry emotion, and that the punctuation tells the reader how strongly to say them.
What mistake should I watch for?
Using too many interjections in one piece of writing. One well-placed Wow! has more power than five.
What grade learns interjections?
Usually 5th grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.5.1a.
