Common questions
What are conjunctions?
A conjunction joins words or ideas. And adds, but shows a difference, or gives a choice, so tells a result, because tells why.
How do I teach conjunctions?
Give children two short sentences on strips (It rained. We stayed inside.) and a card with a conjunction. They put the card between the strips and read the new sentence aloud. Swap the card and talk about how the meaning changes.
What mistake should I watch for?
Writing a "because" part on its own, as in "Because it was raining." Ask, "Because it was raining, what happened?" and add the missing idea.
What grade learns conjunctions?
Usually 3rd grade. In the Common Core it is part of L.3.1h, L.3.1i.
