A place value chart gives every digit its own column, so children can see what each digit is worth. The 7 in 375 means 7 tens, or 70, and the chart makes that easy to see and to say.

How to use a place value chart

  1. 1Start from the right. Write the last digit in the ones column, then work left: tens, hundreds, thousands.
  2. 2Say the value of each digit. In 4,286, the 2 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 200.
  3. 3Group by threes. Big numbers are read in groups of three: ones, thousands, millions. Each group has its own hundreds, tens and ones.
  4. 4Line up the decimal point. On the decimal chart the point never moves. Tenths come right after it, then hundredths and thousandths.

Common questions

What is a place value chart?

A place value chart is a table with one column for each place: ones, tens, hundreds and so on. Writing a number in the chart shows the value of every digit.

How do you read a number to the millions?

Read each group of three digits, then say its name. 4,286,315 is read as four million, two hundred eighty-six thousand, three hundred fifteen.

What comes after the decimal point?

Tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths. In 3.47, the 4 means 4 tenths and the 7 means 7 hundredths.
