How to do it

Line up the tens and the ones. Add the ones first: 4 + 5 = 9. Then add the tens: 3 + 2 = 5. So 34 + 25 = 59.

Teaching tip

Say each number as tens and ones: 34 is 3 tens and 4 ones. Adding tens works just like adding ones: 3 tens + 2 tens = 5 tens.
