How to do it

Add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12. That is 1 ten and 2 ones, so write 2 and carry the 1 ten. Then add the tens: 1 + 4 + 2 = 7. So 47 + 25 = 72.

Teaching tip

Regrouping means 10 ones become 1 ten. Bundling 10 straws or sticks with a rubber band shows it clearly.

Common questions

How do you teach two-digit addition with regrouping?

Add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12. That is 1 ten and 2 ones, so write 2 and carry the 1 ten. Then add the tens: 1 + 4 + 2 = 7. So 47 + 25 = 72. Regrouping means 10 ones become 1 ten. Bundling 10 straws or sticks with a rubber band shows it clearly.

What grade is two-digit addition with regrouping?

Usually 2nd grade. In the Common Core it is part of 2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.9.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Page 5 has every answer from the pack and a short teaching tip. The worksheet maker also adds an answer key to every sheet it makes.

With or without regrouping first?

Without. Children first learn to line up tens and ones and work ones first. Regrouping (carrying or borrowing a ten) comes next, usually in 2nd grade.
