  2. 0:03 A quadrilateral is any flat shape with 4 straight sides and 4 vertices. Some have special names: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, and trapezoid.

  4. 0:25 Name the quadrilateral. Look at its sides and angles: it's a trapezoid.

How to do it

A quadrilateral is any flat shape with 4 straight sides and 4 vertices. Some have special names. A square has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. A rectangle has 4 right angles. A rhombus has 4 equal sides. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides, and a trapezoid has 1 pair.

Teaching tip

Use the corner of a sheet of paper as a right angle tester. Children hold it in each corner of a shape to check for right angles. Some books define a trapezoid as having at least one pair of parallel sides, so check what your school uses.

Word problems

Hana drew a quadrilateral with 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. What is it?Show answer

a square

Each side of a rhombus is 3 cm long. What is the total length of all its sides?Show answer

12 cm (3 x 4)

Adam says every square is also a rectangle. Is that true? Why?Show answer

Yes. A square has 4 right angles, and its opposite sides are equal, so it is a special rectangle.

How many vertices do 4 quadrilaterals have in all?Show answer

16 vertices (4 x 4)
