- 0:00 Let's practice multiplying by 10 and 100, step by step.
- 0:05 Use the basic fact, then count the zeros. 4 × 3 = 12, so 4 × 30 = 120, and 4 × 300 = 1,200.
- 0:18 7 × 200. The basic fact is 7 × 2 = 14. Then add 2 zeros: 1,400.
- 0:28 Solve in columns. 7 × 200 = 1,400.
- 0:35 Complete the pattern: 3, 30, 300, 3,000. Each zero makes the number ten times bigger.
- 0:44 Word problems. A box holds 50 crayons. How many crayons are in 10 boxes? The answer is 500.
- 0:53 Great job! Now print the free worksheet, and finish the rest on your own.
How to do it
Use the basic fact, then count the zeros. 4 × 3 = 12, so 4 × 30 = 120 and 4 × 300 = 1,200. Each zero moves the digits one place to the left.
Teaching tip
Show it with place value: 4 groups of 3 tens is 12 tens, which is 120. Children then see why the zero appears, rather than just adding one.
