How it works
When a short word ends in e, the e is silent. It jumps back over one letter and makes the vowel say its name: cap becomes cape, and the a says "ay", just like the letter name.
Watch for
Reading the vowel short anyway, as in "cak" for cake. Have children look at the end of the word first: is there an e? Then the vowel says its name.
