Writing Workspace
Long-form writing environment with project management, research integration, and drafting tools
About This Template
Writing Workspace is a complete Obsidian vault for long-form writers — novelists, nonfiction authors, essayists, and bloggers who need to manage the entire writing process from idea to published piece. It combines project management (tracking multiple writing projects with word count goals and deadlines), research integration (linking notes and sources to specific chapters or sections), and a focused drafting environment (distraction-free mode with typewriter scrolling and session targets).
The vault's philosophy is that writing is a project, not just an activity. Each writing project gets: a project hub with word count tracking and deadline management, a research folder linked to your Zettelkasten or Research Hub, a chapter/scene manager for long-form works, and a submissions tracker (for articles and short stories). Writing analytics — words per session, best writing times, project completion rates — help you understand and optimize your creative process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this instead of Scrivener?
Writing Workspace provides Scrivener-equivalent functionality (chapter management, research integration, distraction-free drafting, compile) with the added benefits of Obsidian's linking, plugin ecosystem, and plain-text file format. The tradeoffs: Scrivener has a more polished compile/export system and built-in formatting templates. Writing Workspace has better research integration and is free to use (beyond the vault purchase). Many writers use both: Writing Workspace for drafting and research, Scrivener for final formatting.
Does it export to Word or PDF?
Yes. The compile feature uses Pandoc (free, open-source) to convert your Markdown manuscript to DOCX or PDF. The vault includes a Pandoc configuration file optimized for manuscript output. For simpler exports, Obsidian's built-in PDF export works for individual notes.
Can I use this for collaborative writing?
Obsidian is primarily a single-user tool. For collaboration, you would need to use a shared sync method (Git, Dropbox) which can cause conflicts if two people edit simultaneously. For truly collaborative writing, Google Docs or Notion may be more practical. For solo writing with occasional editor feedback (export → email → import feedback), Writing Workspace works well.
