Research Hub

Academic and professional research system with literature management and annotation workflows

Updated August 2026$29 one-time Elena Torres

About This Template

Research Hub is purpose-built for serious researchers — graduate students, academics, and professionals who need to manage hundreds of sources, extract insights systematically, and synthesize findings into papers, reports, or literature reviews. It is more structured than the Zettelkasten Vault, designed for projects with defined outputs (dissertations, systematic reviews, research papers) rather than open-ended knowledge building.

The vault centers on a literature review database that uses Dataview to generate dynamic views: papers by topic, by methodology, by year, by citation count, by your own rating. Each source gets a structured template with fields for research question, methodology, key findings, limitations, and your critical analysis. An annotation system (powered by the Annotator plugin) lets you highlight PDFs and extract annotations directly into Obsidian notes with automatic source linking.

Highlights

Literature review database with dynamic Dataview-powered views
PDF annotation extraction with automatic source linking
Zotero integration for citation management
Research question tracker connecting sources to specific questions

Key Features

Literature Database

Structured source entries with 15 metadata fields. Dataview views: by topic, methodology, rating, year. Identify research gaps visually.

Annotation Extractor

Annotate PDFs in Obsidian. Extract highlights and comments into structured notes. Automatic source linking preserves provenance.

Research Question Tracker

Connect sources to research questions. See which questions are well-supported and which need more evidence. Identify saturation points.

Writing Pipeline

Templates for paper outlines, literature reviews, and research proposals. Pull in source citations and annotations directly.

Zotero Bridge

Import from Zotero with one click. Automatic metadata population. Bidirectional linking between your reference manager and notes.

What's Included

Complete research vault with folder structure
Literature review database template (15 metadata fields)
Pre-configured Annotator plugin for PDF annotation
Zotero integration setup and templates
Writing templates (paper, lit review, proposal)
Dataview query library for literature analysis
Research workflow guide (40+ pages)

Pros & Cons

What We Like

  • Most comprehensive Obsidian research system available
  • Annotation extraction is a game-changer for literature-heavy research
  • Zotero integration is well-implemented and documented
  • Dataview query library for literature analysis is extensive
  • Research workflow guide is academically rigorous

What Could Be Better

  • More structured than some researchers prefer (less flexible than pure Zettelkasten)
  • Annotator plugin can be finicky with certain PDF formats
  • Requires Zotero for full functionality (though manual entry works too)
  • Setup is more involved than simpler Obsidian vaults (plan 30-45 minutes)

Who It's For

PhD students managing dissertation research
Researchers conducting systematic literature reviews
Policy analysts synthesizing evidence from multiple sources
Anyone who needs to extract and organize insights from 50+ sources

Use Cases

PhD Dissertation

Track 200+ sources across 3 research questions. Annotation extraction builds a searchable insight database. Writing templates accelerate chapter drafting.

Systematic Review

Literature database tracks inclusion/exclusion decisions. Dataview queries identify methodological patterns. Research question tracker shows evidence saturation.

Policy Research

Connect sources to policy recommendations. Annotation system extracts evidence strength. Writing templates produce policy briefs with proper citations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Research Hub alongside the Zettelkasten Vault?

They are designed as separate systems. Research Hub is structured for projects with defined outputs; Zettelkasten Vault is optimized for open-ended knowledge building. Some researchers use both — Research Hub for dissertation work and Zettelkasten Vault for general knowledge management. However, merging them into one vault requires significant customization.

Do I need to use Zotero?

Zotero integration is optional but highly recommended for efficiency. You can manually enter source metadata, but for research involving 50+ sources, Zotero saves substantial time. The template includes a manual entry workflow for researchers who prefer not to use Zotero.

Does the annotation extractor work with scanned PDFs?

The Annotator plugin works best with text-based PDFs. Scanned PDFs that have been OCR'd may work inconsistently. For archival research with scanned documents, you may need to manually transcribe key passages rather than relying on annotation extraction.
